Minimally Invasive Surgery

Newcastle gynaecologist Sharyn Rayner discusses minimally invasive procedures: Laparoscopic procedures, Hysteroscopic procedures, Vaginal proceduresAdvantages of minimally invasive gynaecology surgery

Many gynaecologic conditions can be treated through a minimally invasive approach. Minimally invasive surgical options generally include hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and vaginal surgery. The advantages of minimally invasive procedures include:

  • Faster recovery times
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced blood loss and infection rates
  • Less postoperative pain

Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery

The following types of minimally invasive surgery are available:

1. Hysteroscopic Surgery

Hysteroscopic surgery involves placing a small camera through the cervix to look at the inside of the uterus. Specialised instruments can be passed through the camera which allows the surgeon to operate inside the uterus without an incision.

Hysteroscopy can be used for:

  • Treatment of heavy periods
  • Removal of polyps and fibroids
  • Contraception (insertion of Mirena)
  • Permanent sterilisation (Essure)

2. Laparoscopic Surgery

Patients having laparoscopic surgery will have a small incision inside the umbilicus, and may have other small (less than 1cm) incisions over the abdomen. These small incisions allow the passage of a camera and special instruments into the abdomen, allowing the surgery to be performed.

Laparoscopy can be used to perform:

  • Evaluations for pelvic pain
  • Treat endometriosis
  • Remove ovarian cysts
  • Permanent sterilisation
  • Laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy

3. Vaginal Procedures

Vaginal procedures involve surgery inside the vaginal canal with no external sutures or visible scars.

Vaginal surgeries can be used for:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Prolapse repair
  • Urinary incontinence treatment with vaginal slings (TVT, TVTO)

It is essential to tailor the treatment plan and surgical approach to each individual patient. Together, we can decide which approach is best for you and your condition.
